When does Medicare pay for nursing home stay? (Neighborhoods logo)

Medicare pays when you or your loved one has a qualifying stay of at least three overnights in the hospital and upon discharge require skilled nursing or rehabilitation services. For days 1-20 Medicare pays 100%, from days 21-100 there is a daily co-pay of $144.50. Some insurance will pay a portion or all of the daily co-pay. Once the patient returns home they have 30 days to “fail”. If that happens they are able to come back for additional rehab, up to the 100 day maximum. You have 60 days out of the nursing home before that benefit resets itself.
