What is the difference between a Screening Mammogram and a Diagnostic Mammogram?

A Screening Mammogram is a screening exam for women without symptoms of abnormalities in their breasts.  The American Cancer Society recommends that women 40 and older should have an annual screening mammogram.  A Diagnostic Mammogram is a targeted exam used to further evaluate a known abnormality on a screening mammogram or found on a physical breast exam.  Diagnostic Mammograms may also be recommended to follow a specific breast condition.   A Diagnostic Mammogram is a separate and distinct test and is not merely a repeat of a screening exam.

What is PENRAD Imaging?

PENRAD is a local radiology company that began in 1978.  Referred to as an ‘office-based’ or ‘freestanding’ radiology organization, PENRAD Imaging has four locations and seventeen Board Certified Radiologists. PENRAD is the largest freestanding radiology organization in Southern Colorado.  PENRAD provides comprehensive services, to include: X-ray, Mammography, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy, Bone Density, CT, MRI, Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT.  Stereotactic, Ultrasound and MRI guided Breast Biopsies are also performed at PENRAD.  Freestanding services are billed as an office visit and are generally less expensive than the same hospital service.

What are x-rays?

X-rays are a form of radiant energy and are used to visualize bone, air and soft tissue.  This form of x-ray energy is sent through the body and is then recorded as an image.  Digital radiology enables the radiologist to view and manipulate these pictures in order to obtain the most comprehensive diagnosis for each patient.  Standard x-rays require a safe amount of radiation in order to generate an x-ray picture.   There is no radiation exposure in MRI and Ultrasound because these tests do not use x-ray energy.

Can I order my own x-ray or imaging tests?

The majority of radiology tests require an order from a Medical Provider and must be clinically indicated.  However, PENRAD allows patients to order their own Screening Mammograms, Heart Screen tests and Bone Density exams.  There is criteria for each of these screening exams that must be met by the patient; medical condition, age and length of time since your last exam. Patients are encouraged to communicate screening results with their Medical Provider.  Insurance coverage frequently pays for these screening exams that are ordered directly by patients.
