What does the D in DPT mean?

The D in “DPT” means Doctor of Physical Therapy; it is a 3-4 year post-baccalaureate degree. The “DPT” can be achieved through an “Entry level DPT” program after completion of a Bachelor’s degree or through a “Transitional DPT” program for practicing physical therapists that already have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the profession.  The “DPT” provides further education in topics such as research, pharmacology, and differential diagnosis and makes the profession better prepared to practice as a direct access provider (i.e. does not require a referral from a physician).

Do I need a referral for PT?

Alaska is one of the 48 states that recognize direct access to physical therapy. A licensed physical therapist can provide “out-patient physical therapy” treatment without a physician’s referral. However, insurance plans differ and some may still require a referral for payment. Medicare and Medicaid recipients may also “refer” themselves to physical therapy; however a treatment plan signed by your medical doctor needs to be on file in your chart.  Therefore, it’s recommended that all Medicare and Medicaid recipients bring a medical referral to their first visit.
