What exactly do chiropractors do and what should I expect from a first visit?

Commonly, when people think of chiropractors they associate us with back pain and they wouldn’t be wrong. Chiropractors treat conditions involving the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerves, muscles, and bones/joints). These conditions include but are not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Chiropractors do not prescribe medication and take a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care. An initial exam would consist of patient history and examination, x-rays or additional imaging, diagnosis, and treatment. Treatment can include a wide range of possibilities from electrical muscle stimulation, medical massage, rehabilitation, spinal decompression therapy, and chiropractic adjustment.

My wife states she feels so much better after she gets “adjusted”. What is a chiropractic adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustments can involve any joint of the body although the spinal adjustment is the most common. There are 24 moveable vertebrae and connecting each vertebrae are 48 joints. These joints allow your spine to move while protecting your spinal cord. Throughout movement, it is not uncommon for a joint to get stuck in a certain position. This causes a restricted motion to that segment of your spine and disallows your spine to move properly. Adjustments allow the spine to be in full alignment allowing it to function properly to protect the spinal cord and relieve any pressure caused on nerves through misalignment.

Why does it take multiple visits to a chiropractor to fix the problem in my back?

Usually when you have a back pain, the underlying problem has been there for a while. Pain is the last symptom to show up. Prior to when pain shows up, muscles are weakening and imbalanced causing spinal misalignments. Typically, within a few visits to the chiropractor, your pain symptoms will improve but the underlying problem is still there. Your body has created a new “normal” of spinal misalignment and muscle weakness. We have to re-train your body to what the actual normal is. The supporting structures of the  can take longer to heal past when you start “feeling good” again.
