I have started sleeping poorly and having leg cramps.  My friend says, 'Take Magnesium.'  I get magnesium in my calcium supplement.  Do I need more?

Magnesium, an essential mineral, activates over 300 different biochemical reactions vital to body function.  While there can be combined causes, leg and muscle cramps, restless sleep, anxiety, fatigue, PMS, headaches, constipation, depression, and heart, bone and joint problems may be linked to magnesium deficiency.  Mental stress, coffee, sugar, alcohol, colas, tobacco, low thyroid function, heavy perspiration, drugs, and diuretics deplete magnesium.  Try pure magnesium oxide powder in a clear gelatin capsule taking 600mg twice daily.  Your friend is probably right.

I suffer terribly from migraine headaches and have found no help.  Any natural suggestion?

If you have ruled out visual, structural misalignment, injury, etc., most migraines are caused by food intolerances, allergies, hormonal imbalances, and mineral deficiency.  Avoid, caffeine, sugar, alcohol, tobacco, artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, and food additives such as MSG (monosodium glutamate).   Food test suspected foods and take a premium sustained release multi-vitamin with trace minerals. I have had great results with pure magnesium oxide 600mg twice daily and pure riboflavin 300mg once daily, both in clear capsules with no additives. Many times the numerous inactive ingredients found in some tablets actually trigger migraines. Women with estrogen dominance or PMS may find natural progesterone cream a wonderful help.

Everyone in my family struggles with high cholesterol.  My brother has started taking red yeast rice and is happy with the results.  What can you tell me about this supplement?

Red yeast is yeast made from fermented rice, it has been shown to support a healthy blood lipid profile. Studies indicate it significantly decreases total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides in hyperlipidemic patients.  The effective dosage is two 600mg capsules twice daily, preferably in a clear capsule with zero additives, and standardized to contain a minimum of 0.4% mevinolin.  Be sure to use a reputable, high quality brand or a compounding pharmacy, as some red yeast rice products contain a nephrotoxin known as citrinin that results from improper fermentation of the rice. It may take 3 months to see results and up to 6 months to see maximal results.

I am 45 years old, I have been having trouble emptying my bladder and I am concerned about prostate enlargement.  Recently, I have been hearing about an herb called saw palmetto as a natural remedy for prostate enlargement.  What can you tell me about this herb?

Many men suffer from Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) or as it is commonly called prostate enlargement.  Saw palmetto has been shown to inhibit the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase in the prostate, which decreases the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone), a more potent form that can cause prostate growth, inhibit urine flow and contribute to hair loss in men. I have several customers that have reported very positive results with a combination product containing saw palmetto as well as  pygeum, pumpkin seed oil, nettle, zinc and lycopene.  The latter two supplements are significant because they have been shown to possibly help prevent prostate cancer in addition to helping with symptoms of BPH.

When I take antibiotics I have digestive problems, diarrhea, and constipation for several days after I have quit using them.  Are there natural products that could help prevent this?

Antibiotics destroy many of the good bacteria in your GI tract, and allow bad bacteria or yeast to overgrow.  This can the symptoms you are having.  Your normal flora can be restored by taking acidophilus and FOS.  A good acidophilus should contain 5 billion bacteria per capsule, and  be properly enteric coated for shelf stability or they die off quickly in the bottle and are ineffective.  FOS is a type of sugar that is not absorbed from the GI tract and passes through serving as food for the good bacteria but is unique in that it is not used as by the bad bacteria, thus making any acidophilus much more effective!

Is diet soda better for you than regular soda?

No! Aspartame is toxic to the human body and actually causes weight gain.  Aspartame breaks down in the body to: 1) Formaldehyde 2) Wood Grain Alcohol 3) Formic Acid.  All 3 are toxic to the brain and have been to seizures, Alzheimer’s, dementia,  ADD  and many other neurological conditions. In his book “Excitotoxins – the Taste that Kills”, Dr. Russell L. Blaylock M.D. does an excellent job proving the toxicity and the disease-causing side effects of aspartame and many other food additives.

Do herbs really work?

Only if you use them! Eighty percent of the world's population use herbs for their primary health care needs. An estimated 70% of all medical doctors in France and Germany regularly prescribe herbal preparations for their patients. Plant compounds are extremely beneficial and contribute to more than half of our modern medicines. While herbs are natural and most are extremely safe, it is wise to use under the care of a Natural Pharmacy, where Pharmacists are specialized in integrating traditional medicine with scientifically proven natural supplement therapy for the prevention and treatment of disease.
