I have had a prostate biopsy that shows cancer. What is next?

Your urologist will meet with you to discuss the various treatments for prostate cancer. These are quite variable and the right choice for you depends heavily on your age, your physical condition, and your personal preferences. Options may include an operation to remove the entire prostate, various forms of radiation therapy, hormonal manipulation of the tumor, or, in some circumstances, not doing anything at all except to monitor the tumor.

Is there a way to prevent kidney stones?

Kidney stones are typically caused by factors that increase the concentration of calcium and other substances such as oxalate or phosphates in your urine. Treatment and prevention of stones can be done through behavioral changes and medications.  To prevent stone formation you should increase your fluid intake, preferably water. Other treatments include decreasing the amount of sodium in your diet as well as the amount of calcium.  If you have a history of kidney stones your doctor may obtain a 24-hour urine study, which will determine any factors that are promoting stone formation and find substances that may prevent this.

What are the treatments for erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) or the inability to achieve or maintain an erection can be caused by many psychological and medical problems.  Treatment can range from simply changing or removing certain medications treating depression, or if there are no medical contraindications to using ED medications, such as medications for your heart containing nitrate (Nitroglycerin) most men will have good success with medication.  If medications do not work there are treatments such as injections, surgical intervention such as penile prosthesis.  Blood tests may be obtained to check for hormone levels which can be treated with supplementation.  Meet with your physician to discuss.
