I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was a teenager.  What can I do to help maintain a healthy spine and reduce the risk of increasing the curvature in the spine?

In physical therapy, we educate the patient in how the back functions and what positions can either increase or decrease the stress on the spine. Simple tasks such as changing the shoulder on which you carry your purse or bag can help decrease the stress places on your back. Checking your posture when sitting at work or when sleeping to make sure your spine is in good alignment is important. Exercises that consist of stretching, yoga, and core strength have also been very beneficial to maintaining a healthy spine.  For more information, call Ellen at STARS at 367-8606.

I rolled my ankle when I was running and now it hurts. What should I do to get the ankle functioning correctly?

Your first concern is decreasing any swelling that is present from the injury. Follow the RICE principle which consists of rest, ice, compression and elevation. Taping the ankle before sport activities or wearing an ankle brace can stabilize the ankle while you are on your feet.  Basic ankle strengthening in a pain-free range is good to keep the ankle functioning correctly. If the pain persists and you have trouble walking, contact your doctor for further assessment. For more information, call Ellen at STARS at 367-8606.
