I bent over and felt a pop and now I have pain going down my right leg. Do I have a herniated disc?
Probably not. Most of the time pain down the leg is caused by 5 or 6 other things, including in order of likelihood; sacro-illiac dysfunction, ligament damage, muscle spasm, facet joint dysfunction, or disc disruption. Of the several thousand back pain patients I have treated, less than 1% have needed surgery for a herniated disc. The critical issue for long term relief is seeing a competent interventional pain doc and getting the right diagnosis!

I’m diabetic and have been diagnosed with “neuropathy”. What is that and can it be cured?
Neuropathy basically means “disease of the nerve”. Diabetes is one of many diseases, which can have an effect on nerves, causing damage to the nerve, which in most instances is irreversible. With diabetic neuropathy, proper control of blood sugar is important. As with most neuropathies, symptomatic treatment with antidepressant and anti-seizure medications has been shown to be beneficial. Spinal Stimulators are another option that maybe beneficial. Narcotic pain medications appear to have less of an effect in neuropathies than in other types of pain.

I have a bad back. What can I do to keep it from hurting?
Don’t give up hope. The highest success from a “bad back” is a customized multidisciplinary program. This program may include specific injections, physical therapy, prescription medications, braces, and  temporary restriction in movements. A physician trained in pain medicine can create a program for you in conjunction with your primary care provider. Our objective is to get you doing as much as you can as soon as you can.
