I have had stones blasted by shock wave lithotripsy three times now. Is there a limit to how many of these treatments I can have?

Extracorporeal Shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is a treatment where kidney stones are pulverized using shock waves in a noninvasive fashion. There is no limit to the number of treatments, but like all procedures, there are risks. When a person forms kidney stones, it is important to perform a metabolic evaluation, including analysis of some of the stone fragments which can be captured by a urine screen as well as some simple urine and blood tests. This can prevent future stones in most cases.

I pass a kidney stone at least once a year. So does my twin brother. Is there anything we can do to stop this?

There are many reasons for making kidney stones, some are genetic and most are environmental or acquired. You need to have the stones analyzed and have blood and urine testing done to determine the cause. A urologist with interest in kidney stones should be able to evaluate you and hopefully slow down or stop your stone production.
