Why do I still have back pain after my back operation?

There are many reasons for back pain that present themselves after a successful back operation. The one most prevalent is a problem with a SI joint dysfunction. The inactivity period prior to your operation, along with the diminished activities while convalescent after surgery causes weakness in the core muscles. This produces a locking of the SI joint to occur with associated intense pain. Physical Therapy treatment will benefit by gently unlocking the SI joint and strengthening the core muscles. Your doctor can give you a prescription for Physical Therapy that would address your problem.

I have degenerative changes in my spine, what can you do?

Most degenerative changes cause a decrease in space between the vertebrae of the spine and the joints (facets) along with spurring. These problems can cause pain. Most patients can benefit from traction to the back or neck areas to open spaces causing a decrease in pain. Recently, the big push is from the commercials using decompression units, but all traction units can be beneficial. We start with a gentle manual stretch and progress to the traction tables. This process should be painless and exercise for stabilization should follow for lasting benefits. Ask your doctor to see if a prescription for Physical Therapy would benefit you.
