Why is my child having difficulties in school with “poor handwriting”?

Handwriting is a skill made up of three components including visual-motor planning, visual spatial processing, and fine motor coordination. These components result in ability to form letters, write within boundaries on paper, and grasp a pencil with control. Many children experience difficulties in these areas: incorrect letter formation, inconsistent size/spacing on paper, or an uncoordinated grasp pattern. An occupational therapist is trained to break down handwriting components and recommend strategies/activities. If you have concern about your child’s handwriting, consult your physician and ask for a referral for an occupational therapy evaluation.
