What can I do about my child’s croupy cough?

Croup is a viral infection of the vocal cords and upper airway. It causes a low-pitched “barky” cough and hoarseness. In more severe cases, it can lead to stridor, which is a raspy vibratory sound associated with difficulty breathing. To help alleviate symptoms at home, place a cool-mist humidifier in the child’s room. For worsening symptoms, try placing the child in a steam-filled bathroom. You can also try drinking warm clear liquids (children >4 months old). Try to keep your child calm, as agitation and crying tend to worsen symptoms. If stridor persists after 20-30 minutes, call your doctor.
