What is molluscum contagiosum?

The last several years in central Florida have witnessed almost epidemic outbreaks of a benign viral skin infection called molluscum contagiosum. The infection occurs most commonly in preschool and early school age children and consists of small pearly bumps on the skin from a single lesion to hundreds. Generally no treatment is needed for this benign rash and the bumps generally resolve within 18 months of first appearing. No restrictions are needed. Control of dry skin with moisturizers may help limit their spread and control itching. Consult your pediatrician if you have questions or concerns.
