What is RSV and is it serious?

RSV, respiratory syncytial virus, is a common respiratory infection, and usually only causes a mild cold. However, very young babies, premature babies, and those with lung disease are at high risk of getting very sick. The symptoms may start like a cold, but then get worse with fever, wheezing, and breathing problems. The virus is spread by physical contact or through the air by sneezing or coughing. It can live for hours on surfaces such as doorknobs or counters. Avoiding close contact with other people who are sick and washing your hands before handling infants may help to prevent it.
