When do I start the conversation with my loved one about moving to community?

In my experience it is always better to start before they need it. Do your homework and narrow down the best two to three communities for them to visit, based on what fits their needs and lifestyle. Then start the conversation, schedule touring so they are able to pick out and develop a plan just in case it is needed in the future. They may be pleasantly surprised at how retirement communities have changed.

What are some signs that my family member may need to move to a facility?

Sometimes our loved ones are good at covering up the fact that they need help. Here are a few signs that something may be going on. The refrigerator is empty or filled with spoiled food, weight loss, wearing the same clothes repeatedly, bills not getting paid, notice bruising or frequent falling. When you start seeing these signs you may want to look into a community. Ask their primary care physician for a geriatric assessment to help determine what level of care they may need.
