As the cold weather sets in, I exercise less and tend to gain weight in the winter. How can I avoid this winter padding?

The change of seasons contributes to a change in available physical activity. The key to fitness and weight management is to find movement that you like and will perform consistently. Your chosen activity may vary seasonally. Physical therapists can help you brainstorm and locate a type of activity which appeals to you. Therapists can also help develop a home program that will provide strength, flexibility, cardio and caloric burn.  Such a program can be performed at home with minimal or no equipment other than your body weight and gravity. Call Maril at STARS at 367-3315 for an appointment and beat the winter weight gain!

I have slept on my stomach for years, but now my neck hurts too much to do so.  Why?

The human spine contains 7 neck bones called vertebrae. When we are young, the bony surfaces at the vertebral joints are smooth, joint fluid is optimal, and there is generally good spacing which allows maximal movement. As we age, structures of bone, cartilage, and fluid production may diminish, compromising joint integrity with limited movement and comfort in positioning. Full rotation of the head and neck in stomach sleeping may become intolerable. There may be other contributing factors which a therapist at STARS can assess. Also, you may attend a free Healthy Back Class at STARS for related information on Spine Care. For more information, call Maril at STARS at 367-3315.
