What causes vertigo when I lie down or roll over in bed at night?

The most common cause of vertigo is Benign Paraoxysmal Positional Vertigo or BPPV.  This occurs when calcium carbonate crystals from one portion of your inner ear get displaced into one of the semicircular canals of your inner ear.  When this occurs, the crystals move freely in the canal when you change your head position, causing a spinning sensation or vertigo.  Treatment is very effective when you go to an expert clinician who is trained at identifying and treating individuals with BPPV, such as the Brooks Rehabilitation outpatient clinic in Waterford Lakes.  Most individuals get complete resolution of their symptoms within 1-2 visits.

What is the vestibular system and vestibular rehabilitation?

The vestibular system, located in your inner ear, is integral for detection of movement and control of your balance. Anytime you move, take off in a plane or ride in an elevator, the inner ear detects the motion and sends signals to the brain that you are in motion.  Based on the information it receives, the brain will tell the body how to react in order to remain stable. If someone develops a loss of vestibular function, they will become off balance and dizzy.  Vestibular rehabilitation is a specialized form of physical therapy
