How do I tell the difference between allergies and a head cold?

It is often difficult to tell the difference between Allergic Rhinitis (Hay-Fever/Rose-Fever) and a head cold in that many of the symptoms are similar between the two.  This will include head congestion, sneezing, headache, and eye irritation.  If your symptoms occur the same time every year, especially when the pollens are elevated, such as the spring and the fall, you may consider that you have allergies.

I take antihistamines for my allergies.  Are some types better than others?

There are many type of antihistamine which are available over the counter and do not need a prescription.  We generally prefer those antihistamines which are non-sedating.  Examples are Loratadine, Fexofenadine and Cetirizine. We also suggest that you do not use a combination product which contains a decongestant. Decongestants can cause insomnia, elevated heart rate and raise an individual’s blood pressure.

I have asthma.  I have heard of many different remedies for this.  What are the best medications for asthma?

There are many different types of medications currently available that are safe and effective for the treatment of asthma. One should differentiate between short acting medications such as Albuterol which is utilized for treatment of an acute flare-up; compared to controller type asthma medications intended for daily or chronic use.  Inhaled corticosteroids such as Flovent, Pulmicort and Asmanex are excellent medications intended to prevent or control flare-up’s of asthma.  They are available by prescription.
