Doctor – I have been suffering from pain in the middle of my foot which goes towards my inside ankle. Did I sprain my foot?

There can be several causes for this, but a great concern would be if there was damage to the posterior tibial tendon. This tendon is important to the support of the foot arch and damage to the tendon can result in painful walking and standing. Like any tendon, you could have a tendonitis (inflammation), or could have a partial or complete rupture of the tendon, all of which could result in a painful midfoot. If you suffer from a painful midfoot, please call our office for a thorough foot examination, since I am the only orthopedic foot and ankle specialist in Naples.

Doctor – I read that most bunions also have hallux valgus. What is that?

It means the great toe (hallux) is pointing towards the outside of the foot (valgus). It’s caused by a deformity in the great toe’s metatarsal bone that creates too much of an angle. The bunion forms from pressure from your shoes that are now rubbing on this point. Conservative treatment can work IF it is treated in its early stages. However, most people will wait too long and the only proper treatment will be surgical intervention. If you would like your foot evaluated for hallux valgus/bunion, please call our office for a thorough examination, since I am the only orthopedic foot and ankle specialist in Naples.

What is a claw toe?

Claw toe is exactly as it sounds; that your toe “claws”, digging into the soles of your shoes and creating painful calluses. The tops of the toes eventually develop painful corns. Early claw toes start as flexible deformities. Treatment involves shoe modification. However, claw toes can get progressively worse. The “claw” toe becomes fixed, and treatment is much more invasive, involving surgical intervention. If you feel you are suffering from claw toe(s) and would like them evaluated, please call our office for an appointment. We are the only Orthopaedic Surgeon with training in Foot and Ankle in this area.
