What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder or GERD?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder or GERD is a very common disorder that occurs at all ages and can cause significant discomfort. It is common in infancy, especially in the first year of life and can present as a chronic cough, frequent spitting up or vomiting.  In older children and adults, it is usually associated with “heartburn” or a burning sensation in the mid-chest. Those who feel symptoms of abdominal discomfort, nausea, dry cough especially at night for more than two weeks should see their doctor.

What is Croup?

Croup is a common viral infection that affects children during the winter and spring. It is caused by the Parainfluenza virus. It is well recognized by its distinctive “barky seal” cough, but may also cause stridor, or an airway narrowing in the neck which can lead to difficulty breathing. Most children start with a clear nasal congestion, runny nose and fever.  After a few days, they may develop the typical cough, usually worse at night. If a child is having difficulty breathing, call 911. Call or see you doctor right away if you suspect your child has Croup.
