What is Croup?

Croup is a common viral infection that affects children during the winter and spring. It is caused by the Parainfluenza virus. It is well recognized by its distinctive “barky seal” cough, but may also cause stridor, or an airway narrowing in the neck which can lead to difficulty breathing. Most children start with a clear nasal congestion, runny nose and fever.  After a few days, they may develop the typical cough, usually worse at night. If a child is having difficulty breathing, call 911. Call or see you doctor right away if you suspect your child has Croup.
