What is the relation between the thyroid and a person's metabolism?

Thyroid hormone generally controls the metabolism in the body. Too much thyroid hormone causes the metabolism and other functions in the body to increase- this is called hyperthyroidism. When the thyroid hormone levels are too low, the body's cells cannot get enough thyroid hormone and the metabolism slows down- this is called hypothyroidism. Both hyperthyroidism and hyperthyroidism are imbalances that should be assessed and treated by an Endocrinologist.

My doctor found a lump in my thyroid gland during a routine physical examination. Should I be worried?

Thyroid lumps, or nodules, are common. Many people have no symptoms from them. The most common symptom is mild discomfort in the neck with swallowing. Most thyroid nodules are benign, but thyroid cancer commonly causes no symptoms. Most thyroid nodules are evaluated by an ultrasound.  If necessary, a needle can be placed in the nodule to determine if there is cancer.  The best way to do this is an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration. This is a safe, simple office procedure, which will indicate whether the thyroid nodule should be surgically removed.  Most thyroid nodules should be evaluated by an endocrinologist.

What are the signs of diabetes?

Frequently signs of diabetes can be very non-specific. These may include increased appetite, excessive thirst, frequent urination, and a decreased resistance to infection, especially urinary tract infections and yeast infections. People with a family history of diabetes or who are overweight are at an increased risk. Diabetic complications can lead to loss of eyesight, kidney function, or even limbs as well as contributing to strokes and heart disease, so if you think you may have diabetes, see your physician.
