Is there treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia?

Yes and No. If the etiology of dementia can be identified and treated, then it is yes. If it cannot be identified then it is no, but there are treatments and interventions that can slow down the progression of the disease. Treating the accompanying conditions such as depression, anxiety, suspicious feelings, impulsiveness and sometimes aggressive behavior can be of immeasurable value.

What are the most common emotional problems / mental disorders that can affect the elderly?

Most common for this age group is dementia, followed by depression and anxiety. Any mental disorder can show up, especially if the person has a previous history of mental problems.  Sometimes the above mentioned problems lead to suspicion toward family members and caregivers (being paranoid). The good news is if these disorders are identified early enough, and appropriately treated and addressed, the outcome can be more favorable and complications and agony can be avoided. With the right approach including education, social support, referring to the appropriate providers and thorough medical and psychiatric assessment and testing and using the appropriate medications, suffering of the patient and family can be minimized.

What is the difference between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia?

There are many kinds of dementia, of which Alzheimer's disease is the most common.     Alzheimer's disease or Dementia of Alzheimer's type is diagnosed by excluding other kinds of known or possible dementia. The sure diagnosis can be made by examining a brain tissue under the microscope to identify the specific pathology of this illness. The changes (basically cognitive and behavioral) are of insidious onset, gradual progression.
