I have heard you can get an infection in your stomach, how can I be checked for this?

There is a bacteria called helicobacter pylorum that can cause an infection in the stomach. It can cause pain or burning, but in most patients causes no symptoms. It can be diagnosed by examination of the blood or stool sample. Also at the time of endoscopy, a biopsy of the stomach can detect this infection. Treatment involves taking two or three antibiotics at the same time along with a medication to suppress acid. Removing this infection can lower your risk of developing an ulcer in the future.

I have a lot of heartburn and reflux and wonder how this should be treated?

You should initially discuss this with your family physician to be certain that your symptoms really do represent acid reflux. Once you are certain that your problem is acid reflux disease there are a number of ways to treat this condition. Certain foods such as fatty foods, caffeine, chocolate and peppermint increase acid reflux. Eating large meals and lying down within 2 hours after eating will increase acid reflux. Being overweight may increase your acid reflux and weight loss may help treat this condition. Medications may also be given to reduce acid reflux. This can be discussed with your physician.
