What is Crohn’s disease?

Crohn’s disease is an ongoing disorder that causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It can affect any part of the GI tract from the esophagus to the rectum. But, most commonly affects the last portion of the small bowel, the ileum, and the colon. The inflammation extends deep into the lining of the affected region which can become ulcerated and the bowel wall may thicken. Symptoms depend on the location of inflammation but may range from recurrent pain, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, and weight loss. There is no cure, but effective medical treatment is available.

What is celiac disease?

Celiac disease (gluten intolerance) is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the villi, areas in small intestines, which aid in absorption of nutrients, minerals and vitamins. The immune system responds to gluten (protein in wheat, rye and barley). Symptoms vary from mild to severe. They include: skin rash, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain/bloating, weight loss, and malnutrition. Due to the broad range of symptoms it is often difficult to diagnose. Because of the damage occurring in the small intestines, it is imperative to quickly and properly diagnose this disease so it can be treated as soon as possible.
