I’m scheduled to have bladder sling surgery for stress incontinence and my doctor wants to do a hysterectomy at the same time.  Is this a good idea and do I really have to have a hysterectomy?Unless there is another indication for hysterectomy such as bleeding, fibroids or support loss, it is not generally necessary.  Data show that hysterectomy has no bearing on outcomes with surgery for stress incontinence.  Procedures for the treatment of incontinence are now minimally invasive and can be done in outpatient centers with little recovery time. Adding hysterectomy to this can lead to more postoperative discomfort as well as increasing the time for recovery and return to work and normal activities.  For more information, visit www.seug.com
